me - nhat minh - 18

Hello world. I’m Nhat Minh Nguyen, and you’ve stumbled upon the space where thoughts take flight, where moments pause. This blog is my canvas that paint the picture of who I am inspired of, and somewhat give you a peak of my taste and personality.

This first blog will be an introduction of me, to you.

Hedi Slimane

In my early teenage years, I aspired to be someone in the creative field, with distinguished aesthetic, like Hedi Slimane.

Hedi Slimane, French fashion designer

Hedi Slimane rock n roll, rugged and skinny aesthetic was prominent during the years between 2012-2015. Especially in Vietnam, where I came from, everyone during that time would want to own a pair of YSL jeans, or the replicates of the silhouettes. This marked a point in life where I wanted to create an aesthetic, an identity for my own personal brand.

Ronnie Fieg - Kith

Kith is a streetwear brand that was founded in 2011 and is renowned for its innovative collaborations, with Ronnie Fieg as its founder. Kith has worked with several brands, like Coca Cola, Rugrats, and Cap’n Crunch, producing exceptional items that merge streetwear and pop culture.

Fieg was dubbed the "collab kingpin" as he went on to introduced collaboration from sport wears brands like Nike, Adidas, Asics, to entertainment firm like Disney and DC. Cross industry collaboration works like Kith did inspired me to be able to build a brand that has a strong enough presence to also do such things, bridging creator of different industries together. As Kith focuses on the 90s pop culture, I wished to do so with the late 2000s and 2010s contents.

Issey Miyake

Digging further into the fashion industry, I later found Issey Miyake, a prominent Japanese designer with a distinct way of pleating and fabric manipulation.

ISSEY MIYAKE, "BODY WORK", C.1983

Miyake focus on clothes as design rather than fashion. His process explores the fundamental relationship between the body, the cloth that covers it, which similarly follow the idea from Mcluhan's text, "All media are extensions of some human faculty —psychic or physical... clothing, an extension of the skin."

In 1993, Miyake introduced "Pleats Please", patented "Finished Pleating" a technique involves cutting and sewing the garment first, then pleating it after, rather than the traditional way of pleating the fabric first, then cutting and sewing.

Pleats Please, Masaya Yoshimura

This discovery of Miyake was during 2019-2020, and I was intrigued with garment design is not just different style of pants, or how to use panels of fabric, but it can start from the fabric itself. I was actually so into it, I tried to pick fabric and pleat them, just to see how does the process work compare to making a normal pants.

There are many other individuals that had inspired, and help me shaped a persona in my creative ventures (some to be mentioned are my dad, Raf Simon, Vitalik Buterin), but the three mentioned above are the ones that have the most influence and I'm eager to see what can I create in the future, following inspiration.
