blank- film
In this project, I took my time to reflect, reply, to the one word that triggered me most in the book, the word made by McLuhan himself, "Allatonceness". The word, if you look carefully to it, it is " All-at-once-ness", in which McLuhan referred to the effects of digitalization. Before the creation of camera, it was texts and papers. This medium allow readers to translate the texts to imagery memory in their own, I think this medium of trans make the activity of consuming the media the least passive.
Then McLuhan continue to introduce the "hot" and "cool media", while many points was made in the book, I find it true that the hot media (movies, theatrical performances) still allow audiences to focus on a specific topic, maintain a line of emotions to have deeper thoughts, while cool media (TV, Youtube, Reels) provided a constant and immediate informations that hinder us from maintain a line of focus to seek deeper connection.
However, artists nowadays, as I have seen, have been experimenting, producing works that bridge the mediums' effects together. With Wes Anderson or Taratino's movies with well scripted dialogues that make some audiences to catch all the word they said ( they could read the subtitles). Or longer videos on Youtube that focus on one specific storyline.
Carrying such ideas into the process of making my films, and my projects. I always wanted to have works that able to merge all the effects, of each medium of media. Now it should be "lukewarm" media. As in the first one, I switch scenes a lot, and most of the time I even put two different cuts in one scene - this to reflect the immediate pace of media pop up through the cool media's medium - and the word "Allatonceness". To balance that, I later put texts subtitles into the film so it can provide the reading action from the books.
Now for this film, I decided to take away the lines and used the same method that seen throughout the two films, use music and the scene as storyteller and emotion guides, and still camera shots with well orchestrated setting.
The story of the film also provide my opinion upon the word "Allatonceness" and the book "The Medium is the Massage". That as you watch it, the film has five scene, one of them is the intro, and the other four, they are two pairs of scene. In the scene where Luis played the piano, get frustrated, get pissed at himself, saw a longer process of reaction comparing to the scene which he was actually peeing, then got pissed because someone waled in to use the urinal right next to him ( the rule is that you should skip one). The other pair is Luis with a computer scene, the one at the office again, see a longer reaction comparing to the scene when he's at home, entertained himself with his own laptop.
